KM3NeT: A Next Generation Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea
نویسنده
چکیده
To complement the IceCube neutrino telescope currently under construction at the South Pole, the three Mediterranean neutrino telescope projects ANTARES, NEMO and NESTOR have joined forces to develop, construct and operate a km-scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. Since February 2006, the technical specifications and performance of such a detector are studied in the framework of a 3-year EUfunded Design Study. In 2009 a technical design report will be released laying the foundations for the construction of the detector. In the following, the current status of the Design Study is presented and examples of solutions for the technical challenges are discussed.

Potential Neutrino Signals from Galactic γ-Ray Sources
The recent progress made in Galactic γ-ray astronomy using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) instrument provides for the first time a population of Galactic TeV γ-ray, and hence potential neutrino sources, for which the neutrino flux can be estimated. Using the energy spectra and source morphologies measured by H.E.S.S., together with new parameterisations of pion production and de...
متن کاملThe KM3NeT Project for a Very Large Submarine Neutrino Telescope
The groups presently pursuing neutrino telescope projects in the Mediterranean Sea, ANTARES, NEMO, and NESTOR, have formed the new KM3NeT consortium to study the construction of a cubic kilometre-scale neutrino telescope for the Northern hemisphere. This challenging project will require the installation of thousands of photon detectors with their related electronics and calibration systems seve...
متن کاملKM3NeT: A km3-scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea
The KM3NeT consortium aims at the construction of a research infrastructure in the Mediterranean deep sea, hosting a neutrino telescope with an instrumented volume of several km3 and an integrated platform for earth and deep sea sciences. The telescope location in the Mediterranean Sea will allow for surveying a large part of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre, thus complementing...
متن کاملThe KM3NeT project: Towards a km3-scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea
In recent decades we have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge on our Universe. However, up to now astronomical observations have been restricted to the electromagnetic spectrum. The detection of cosmic high-energy neutrinos (& 1 TeV) will complement the information from these observations and at the same time provide completely new insights. The low interaction probability, which renders ne...
متن کاملPower and Submarine Cable Systems for the KM3NeT kilometre cube Neutrino Telescope
The KM3NeT EU-funded consortium, pursuing a cubic kilometre scale neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea, is developing technical solutions for the construction of this challenging project, to be realized several kilometres below the sea level. In this framework a proposed DC/DC power system has been designed, maximizing reliability and minimizing difficulties and expensive underwater acti...
